Files on AFS are stored on servers (such as the SCS AFS servers located in our machine rooms). Access to these files is controlled by a cache manager which runs on your local host. The cache manager keeps an on-disk cache of files that have been previously accessed. When you attempt to access data on AFS, it checks to see if the data is in this
An individual server or cluster can be registered with only one Storage Sync Service at a time. OpenAFS for Windows OpenAFS is the world's foremost location independent file system. With OpenAFS for Windows, users of Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, 2003, XP64, Vista (all editions), Server 2008 (all editions), Windows 7 (all editions), Server 2008 R2 (all editions), Windows 8.x (amd64, x86), and Server 2012 (all editions) can make the most of this proven data sharing solution. Codes can be used to gain rewards such as Yen and Chikara Shards. They can be redeemed by pressing the blue bird button and entering the codes below. If you do not have a standard PSI System you will need to install an AFS client for yourself. kAFS and AF_RXRPC Introduction. The primary goal of the kAFS project is to provide a filesystem within the Linux kernel that can communicate with an AFS server to the same extent that OpenAFS can and, as such, can be a drop-in replacement for OpenAFS on the Linux platform. With the sources being in the upstream Linux kernel, kAFS can take advantage of GPL-only kernel APIs and can be fixed up 2019-11-13 2018-07-19 AFS communication is implemented over TCP/IP (default server ports: UDP 7000-7009).
If a client machine updates a file, it updates a local copy and sends the update to the server. In contrast, other file systems (such as NFS), 2021-04-03 Central AFS file servers provide storage for the users home directories and project directories.

The authentication server can also be a central node in charge of the authentication of other services the provider offers. You can use HFS (HTTP File Server) to send and receive files. It's different from classic file sharing because it uses web technology to be more compatible with today's Internet. It also differs from classic web servers because it's very easy to use and runs "right out-of-the box".

AFS protocol architecture Volume = miniature file system One user's files, project source tree, Unit of disk quota administration, backup Mount points are pointers to other volumes Client machine has Cell-Server Database /afs/andrew.cmu.edu is a cell protection server handles authentication volume location server maps volumes to file servers
Communication between AFS server and client is restricted by the default firewall configuration on RHEL 3.0 . The firewall configuration needs to be changed to allow traffic to flow between AFS server and client. To change the firewall configuration, follow the procedure mentioned below: Log on to the system as root
• AFS communications protocol is optimized for Wide Area Networks. Retransmitting only the single bad packet in a batch of packets • Improved system management capability • configuration changes can be made from any client in the AFS cell • AFS volumes can move from one server to another without users noticing it
AFS will automatically register all of a file server machine's addresses in the VLDB as part of its support for multihoming. When it has replaced the IP address in the VLDB, the addresses stored in the /usr/afs/local/sysid file on this server are updated.

Overview Stanford provides secure tools — WebAFS, OpenAFS, and SFTP — for you to transfer computer files to and from your AFS storage/web space, and between desktop machines using AFS as a virtual bridge.
What is AFS? AFS is a distributed filesystem product, pioneered at Carnegie Mellon University and supported and developed as a product by Transarc Corporation (now IBM Pittsburgh Labs). It offers a client-server architecture for federated file sharing and replicated read-only content distribution, providing location independence, scalability, security, and transparent migration capabilities. AFS uses Kerberos for authentication, and implements access control lists on directories for users and groups. Each client caches files on the local filesystem for increased speed on subsequent requests for the same file. This also allows limited filesystem access in the event of a server crash or a network outage. AFS uses the Weak Consistency Defining AFS server encryption keys in the /usr/afs/etc/KeyFile file as described in Managing Server Encryption Keys. Granting system administrator privileges with respect to BOS Server, Volume Server, and Backup Server operations, by adding a user to the /usr/afs/etc/UserList file as described in Administering the UserList File.
