Thanks to the Nyquist-Shannon theorem, we know that if we’re attempting to sample a signal containing frequencies higher than the Nyquist Frequency, our sampling process is flawed. What the theorem doesn’t tell us, is how exactly the sampling process breaks down when we attempt to sample signals which spill over the Nyquist limit.

The frequency f n = 1/2Δt is called the Nyquist frequency. When spectra are presented for digital data, the highest frequency shown is the Nyquist frequency. For IRIS broadband seismic stations, Δt = 0.05 s, so the Nyquist frequency is 10 Hz.

nyquist(sys) creates a Nyquist plot of a dynamic system sys. nyquist creates a Nyquist plot of the frequency response of a dynamic system model. When invoked without left-hand arguments, nyquist produces a Nyquist plot on the screen. Nyquist plots are used to analyze system properties including gain margin, phase margin, and stability. nyquist(sys) creates a Nyquist plot of a dynamic system sys.

If I record EEG at 1000 hz for example (1 sample a millisecond, so pretty quick) the nyquist frequency is 500 hz. That’s all fine, but what does that even mean? The Nyquist Theorem states that in order to adequately reproduce a signal it should be periodically sampled at a rate that is 2X the highest frequency you wish to record. With images, frequency is related to structure size. Small structures are said to have a high frequency.

If the Nyquist frequency is the highest frequency about which the data can inform us, then on the other side of the spectrum is the lowest frequency, which is simply 1 cycle per \(n\) observations.

Nyquist limit: the highest frequency component that can be accurately represented: $\displaystyle f_{\mbox{max}} < f_s/2. Nyquist frequency: sampling rate

Het zwarte punt in de figuur, met als x-coördinaat 0,6 f s , stelt de amplitude en frequentie van een sinusfunctie voor waarvan de frequentie 60% van de sampling-snelheid bedraagt (f s ). Seismic data is usually acquired with either a 4 millisecond sample interval (250 Hz sample rate) if you are offshore, or 2 millisecond sample interval (500 Hz) if you are on land. A recording system with a 250 Hz sample rate has a Nyquist frequency of 125 Hz. So information coming in above 150 Hz will wrap around or fold to 100 Hz, and so on.

Use logspace to generate logarithmically spaced frequency vectors. The frequency f N = d scan / 2 is called the Nyquist frequency. By definition f N is always 0.5 cycles/pixel. The first sensor null (the frequency where a complete cycle of the signal covers one sample, hence must be zero regardless of phase) is twice the Nyquist frequency.

The Nyquist rate or frequency is the minimum rate at which a finite bandwidth signal needs to be sampled to retain all of the information. An example of folding is depicted in Figure 1, where fs is the sampling rate and 0.5 fs is the corresponding Nyquist frequency. nyquist (sys,w) explicitly specifies the frequency range or frequency points to be used for the plot.

The Nyquist frequency is one-half the rate at which you sampled your data. If I record EEG at 1000 hz for example (1 sample a millisecond, so pretty quick) the nyquist frequency is 500 hz. That’s all fine, but what does that even mean? Well to answer that question we need to think about waves.
